MEXICO CITY (El Universal).— Workers of the Federal Judicial Branch (PJF) supported the chief justice of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) and the Federal Judicial Council (CJF), Norma Piña.

Magdalena Victoria Oliva, Fifth District Judge Specialized in the Execution of Sentences, said that if the Chief Justice of the Court decides to resign, they will respect it, but she will continue to be their pillar because she has demonstrated the courage that they should have not only as a judge, but also as a woman.

Speaking to hundreds of workers, he said that dismissing more than 6,000 judges would politicize justice. He emphasized that by controlling the judiciary, all counterweights are eliminated, and a country without counterweights is a vehicle without brakes.

“A judge might not decide independently if he is aligned with some political aspect,” he said. “A judge cannot guarantee investments in Mexico under these conditions, cannot guarantee compliance with the regulatory framework, cannot guarantee compliance with contracts.”

He also warned that the reform might jeopardize Chapter 23 of the Free Trade Agreement, which establishes that Mexico is committed to creating independent courts to resolve labor disputes.

“The judiciary is not a political power, the judiciary is the barrier that prevents any ordinary citizen from being arrested, or from having his house expropriated, or from having his business closed.”

Lenia Batres No interest

The minister denied that it was her intention to preside over the Supreme Court if Norma Piña were to leave.

Without interlocutors

Lenia stressed that she does not see the need at this time for a minister to act as an interlocutor between the legislative and executive branches. “I do not see a spokesperson nor do I see the need to change positions, it is something that distracts us, I do not see the difference,” she said.
