Norma Piña invites to a plural dialogue

MEXICO CITY (El Universal).— At the last event of the National Meeting for a Security and Justice Agenda, the president of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN), Norma Piña, invited President López Obrador and virtual president Claudia Sheinbaum to join this plural dialogue.

“Please open the door for us to share the findings of this national meeting and analyze how the reform affects not only the future of justice, but of our entire country,” he said at the Tlatelolco Cultural Center.

The minister added that when proposing a reform of such importance, it must be the result of a diagnosis based on objective and real information.

“I want to make a strong call for a dialogue that puts the needs of victims at the center, a dialogue that focuses on the needs of the users of the justice system (…), I want to reiterate the importance of taking into account the inputs of this national meeting, I recognize that a reform is needed and this has to include changes in the Federal Judiciary,” he said.

“But I cannot help but point out that in order to really offer solutions that address the main needs that we have identified through this national meeting, it is essential to consider the problem in a comprehensive manner… the worst thing we might do is rush a diagnosis or make people think that the solution lies in removing whoever is facing it,” he emphasized.

“No” to improvising

“This challenge is based on a system, but it is not the system as a whole and we cannot take the easy way out. We cannot start from scratch, the complex context in which our country is living does not allow improvisation, this will not benefit those seeking justice, on the contrary, it represents a step backwards in the protection of human rights, putting the continuity of the administration of justice at risk,” he pointed out.

She warned that if the judicial reform is approved in its terms, the most qualified person will no longer be in the position, the person who spent years studying to prepare for the exam will not be in the position, but the most popular person, the one who knew how to relate well with the power groups (…), in other words, what they are trying to eradicate will be provoked; the reform does not address the root problem,” Norma emphasized.

WarningThe worst

The worst thing that can happen to Mexico is to fall into uncertainty, warned Minister Norma Piña.

Essential requirements. Indispensable requirements

“The existence of an autonomous, independent federal judiciary, free from the vagaries of politics, is an indispensable requirement for the defense of our democracy, which has cost us so much to build,” he said.
