In recent years, Læsø Municipality has experienced a significant increase in the number of German citizens who choose to settle on the island.
There are currently 26 German citizens, and although it does not sound like a lot, it means that 1.5 percent of the population on Læsø are German citizens.
This places Læsø Municipality as the North Jutland municipality with the highest percentage of permanently resident German citizens. Nationally, Læsø comes in 7th place among municipalities with the highest share. This is shown by a study from DR.
And the fact that it is Læsø Municipality that has North Jutland’s highest proportion of German citizens is not surprising. It is a general tendency that the Germans are particularly fond of the Danish islands.
– It’s healing for me
One of the 26 German citizens on Læsø is Christiane Linden, who together with her wife bought a house on Læsø four years ago, and earlier this year also moved her address here.
– I first went on holiday to Læsø 25 years ago, so I have known the island for a long time. When the corona broke out, we wanted to move out, where there was more space and air, and there it was natural to look towards Læsø, which we both loved, she says.
Since the purchase of the house, Christiane Linden’s wife has passed away, but this has not made Christiane Linden regret the move to Læsø. On the contrary.
– I would say that it is actually healing for me to live here. There is peace and there is nature that changes all the time. But at the same time, there are also a lot of communities that you can join, and the interaction between peace and freedom and binding communities, it has been really good for me, she says.

Danish tranquility
Christiane Linden knows most of the other German citizens on Læsø, and although they naturally meet and talk together, it is far from a closed club.
-All the Germans I know, they love Læsø and they love the residents of Læsø
– So we make a great deal of effort to become part of the island community, says Christiane Linden, who comes from the city of Koblenz with approximately 130,000 inhabitants.
For example, she has taught herself Danish, which she speaks quite fluently today.
-Another possible reason for the move is that, at any rate, I also think that there are many things that are not going so well in Germany. There are many who are having a hard time. And here the Danish way of life and being is different. It is probably calmer, and people take things as they come, she says.
According to the survey from DR, it suggests that Germans generally seem to thrive on the Danish islands, as Fanø, Bornholm, Langeland and Samsø also have a high proportion of German citizens in relation to their population.
Læsø Municipality states that they are happy that Læsø Municipality has become an attractive place for German immigrants, and they look forward to welcoming even more in the future.
