The good campaign that Nathaniel Méndez-Laing has had with the Derby County in English League One (third division of that country) can be rewarded with the award for best player of the season.

This was announced by the English Football League (EFL) this Wednesday, April 3, through a statement on its website where it also reported that the winners will be announced at the League’s annual ceremony in London on Sunday, April 14.

The other two players competing with the Guatemalan for the best player award are Marlon Pack (Portsmouth) and Harrison Burrows (Peterborough).

At the moment Derby County is in second place in League One and is in the fight to be promoted to the Championship (second division).

They have played 42 games and accumulated 87 points and there are 5 points that separate them from Portsmouth, which has a game in hand, while Derby County has four games left to complete the season.

If Derby County still has a chance of securing direct promotion, it is largely due to the individual season that Méndez-Laing had in the attack:

For now the Guatemalan is second top scorer on his team (8 goals) and is the best assister in the entire league: he has accumulated 15 assists.

Méndez-Laing made his debut with the Guatemala National Team in June of last year in the 1-0 victory once morest his counterpart from Cuba on the first date of the 2023 Gold Cup. Since then the scorer became one of the favorites of the Guatemalan fans. and he was one of Luis Fernando Tena’s undisputed starters in the tournament in which Guatemala reached the quarterfinals.

Méndez-Laing was not present on the March Fifa date with the Guatemala National Team, but it is expected that Luis Fernando Tena can count on him for the World Cup qualifying matches once morest Dominica and the British Virgin Islands on June 5 and 8.

In addition, he might also be there for the duel once morest Argentina on June 14 and for the probable match once morest Uruguay (not confirmed).
