noise reduction arrives on headphones at an attractive price

Sony has unveiled two new wireless headphones, the Sony WH-CH720N and the Sony WH-CH520. The first benefits from noise reduction inherited from the firm’s top-of-the-range model.

In the field of audio, Sony has been able to carve out a reputation, in a few years, as a manufacturer offering one of the best noise reductions on the market on its wireless headphones and earphones. The Japanese manufacturer, however, until now reserved this functionality for these most expensive models. If a few more affordable exceptions existed, such as the Sony LinkBuds S or the Sony WH-XB910N, the firm now intends to extend active noise reduction to really more accessible models.

On Monday February 21, Sony announced the arrival of two new wireless headphones, the Sony WH-CH720N and the Sony WH-CH520, two models with very different philosophies which had already been the subject of leaks a while ago. A few days.

The Sony WH-CH520 is a supra-aural Bluetooth headset, that is to say that its pads come to rest on the auricle and not around it. It thus benefits from lower passive isolation than headphones in circum-aural format, and does not include active noise reduction, but is intended to be more compact. We are thus entitled to a helmet of 147 grams. For sound reproduction, it has two transducers – one for each ear – 30 mm in diameter and compatibility with Bluetooth 5.2 – multipoint compatible – and Bluetooth SBC and AAC audio codecs. We will also find Sony’s DSEE algorithm, supposed to improve the sound quality of a poor quality MP3 file thanks to upscaling. Sony also announces an autonomy of up to 50 hours with its WH-CH520.

More interestingly, the Sony WH-CH720N is a circum-aural headset that borrows a lot from the manufacturer’s WH-1000X models, starting with its circum-aural format with pads that surround the ear. The Japanese manufacturer also announces that it has integrated the same Sony V1 processor as on the WH-1000XM5 for the management of active noise reduction. However, the WH-CH720N only benefits from two microphones for capturing ambient noise – compared to four per ear for the WH-1000XM5.

We will find multipoint Bluetooth 5.2 compatibility with SBC and AAC codecs as well as dynamic transducers 30 mm in diameter. The autonomy is however a little lower than on the smaller headphones, with up to 35 hours by activating the active noise reduction. On the other hand, you can enjoy your music for 50 hours, but without noise reduction.

The two new Sony headsets are already available. The Sony WH-CH520 is offered at a price of 70 euros in black, blue, white and beige, while the Sony WH-CH720N is available in black, blue and white, at a price of 150 euros. For comparison, the Sony WH-1000XM5 can now be found around 420 euros.
