“Radio Charity Musicthon” is a charity campaign that raises funds to install “sound traffic lights” so that visually impaired people can walk around town with peace of mind. Started in 1975, it is held over a three-month period from November 1st to January 31st of the following year. Every year, a 24-hour charity live broadcast is held from noon on Christmas Eve, when interest in charity increases, on December 24th to noon on the following day, Christmas Day, on the 25th, with people associated with Nippon Broadcasting as the main personalities.

After finishing the 24-hour live broadcast, Kubo said, “I was able to see the faces of the listeners for the first time in a while, many guests came, and I was able to borrow the help of many people. “I never thought, “It’s going to be tough,” or “I wonder if I’ll be able to make it through,” and the 24 hours passed by in the blink of an eye.”

In the “big ending” that marked the end of the 24-hour live broadcast, Kubo sang “Departure Day” with the children from the University of Tsukuba School for the Visually Impaired, who also participated in the opening and sang “Believe.” There were moments during the singing and final greetings when tears fell down, but Kubo explained why, saying, “Honestly, since the 25th, there have been countless moments where I feel like I’m regarding to burst into tears if I let my guard down even a little.” “It happened so many times that I mightn’t help myself,” he said, “I kept trying to endure it until I somehow fulfilled my role.”

Meanwhile, when Kubo visited a special needs school for the visually impaired, he heard children’s wishes for a “traffic light that makes a sound.” As I listened to everyone sing, I was reminded of the idea that I would have more and more opportunities to go to new places, and that I would be able to visit many different places without having to feel scared. The tears that she had been holding back overflowed, she said.

Lastly, he concluded, “For the past 24 hours, I have been talking regarding the importance of sound-emitting traffic lights for people with visual impairments, and the fact that they are currently insufficient. I don’t think things will change, but we will gradually change into a better society to live in through accumulation.” He added, “Musicathon, which will be celebrating its 49th time this year and its 50th time next year, has continued so far. I hope I was able to convey the meaning and significance of this in the past 24 hours, and I would be happy if it gave many people an opportunity to think regarding it.” With a smile on his face, he expressed his enthusiasm for next year, saying, “If I have the chance, I would love to do it once more!”

This year’s campaign and donations are being accepted until January 31, 2024.
