Born on December 22, 1960 in Ovan in the province of Ogooué Ivindo, Noël Nelson Messone, 64 years old, is currently Gabon’s ambassador to the United States of America.
Candidate for the post of Director-General of UNESCO, whose headquarters is in Paris, France, Noël Nelson Messone holds a doctorate in political economy from the University of Kentucky (USA) and a master’s degree in diplomacy and international trade from the Patterson School of Diplomacy and International Commerce in Lexington, Kentucky, as well as another degree from the University of Paris-Sorbonne Nouvelle.
He twice served as Gabonese Minister of Foreign Affairs. He was also Minister of the Environment and former Minister of Relations with Institutions.
Former Director of State Protocol under former Gabonese President Ali Bongo Ondimba, Nelson Messone, very calm and discreet, was also Gabon’s permanent representative to the United Nations.
A sure value of Gabonese diplomacy, the candidate to succeed the French Audrey Azoulay (51 years old) Noel Nelson MESSONE was from 2007 to 2009, Minister Delegate of Foreign Affairs of Gabon, after having held the position of Senior Political Advisor to the Secretary General of the International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF) in Paris (2003-2007). Previously, he was the Regional Director of West Africa for Agence. Nelson MESSONE had held other important positions including within the US Peace Corps in Gabon.
The announcement of his candidacy by the transitional government is a big gamble for the military in power.
