After the successful European Short Course Championships in Romania, the Ticino native is already turning his attention to Paris – and not to Doha.
Noè Ponti was the first Swiss to win three gold medals and one silver at the same championships. Previously, no Swiss swimmer had won more than two medals in title competitions. And he was the first European ever to win at the European Small Pool Championships in all dolphin distances: 50 m, 100 m and 200 m.
He is very proud to have been the first to achieve such a triple. «When we flew to Bucharest, my goal was to win a gold medal. Now there are even three and a silver one. That gives me a lot of motivation,” said the Ticino native following his arrival in Zurich early on Monday evening.
Training camp in St. Moritz instead of the World Cup in Doha
Ponti won’t be resting for long following his great success. He only allows himself a three-day break at Christmas and takes two days off on New Year’s Day. “In the next two weeks it might be a little easier, but then you start to push once more,” said the 22-year-old from Gambarogno.
Ponti’s full focus is now on the Olympic Games. He announced in November that he would not take part in the World Championships in Doha in February. Since he has already qualified for Paris 2024, “it makes no sense for me to compete for 8 days and lose 10 days of training,” he explains. Instead, Ponti will take part in the Swiss Championships in the spring before heading into the home straight to Paris. His preparation includes, among other things, a training camp in St. Moritz and Lanzarote.
It will still be a while before the Olympics, but the Ticino native has big plans for Paris. In Tokyo two and a half years ago he won bronze in the 100 m dolphin. With a European record over this distance, he definitely caused a big exclamation mark in Romania.
