NOAA-NHC: Beryl’s winds have diminished, making it a Category 2 hurricane

MIAMI, Florida, USA- — The National Hurricane Center (NHC), based in Miami, Florida, United States, announced its notice at 2:00 p.m. EDT (12:00 p.m. Central Mexico Time), Thursday, July 4, 2024.

In its report, the NHC announced that Hurricane Beryl continues to move through the Caribbean Sea, with strong winds causing dangerous storm surge and high waves as it heads toward the Yucatan Peninsula.

In its 2:00 p.m. EDT (12:00 p.m. Central Mexico Time) summary, the Hurricane Center reports that Beryl is located at latitude 19.2 north, longitude 83.4 west, approximately 215 km from Grand Cayman and 445 km from Tulum, Quintana Roo.

The storm’s sustained winds are reaching 175 km/h, with stronger gusts.

Hurricane Beryl is currently moving at a speed of 30 km/h and the minimum central pressure is 974 Mb, or 28.76 inches.

Surveillance and warnings

The NHC has issued a hurricane warning for the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula from Puerto Costa Maya to Cancun, including the island of Cozumel, Quintana Roo.

A hurricane watch is also in effect for the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, south from Costa Maya to Chetumal and north from Cancun to Cabo Catoche.

Forecast for the next few hours

Hurricane Beryl is expected to continue moving west to west-northwestward today and tomorrow as the center of the storm moves away from the Canary Islands.
Cayman and is heading towards the Yucatan Peninsula, where it might make landfall early Friday morning.

After crossing the Peninsula, Beryl will exit the Gulf of Mexico on Friday night and move northwestward where it might make landfall on Saturday.

Reports from Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft indicate that maximum sustained winds are now near 175 km/h (108 mph), with higher gusts, making Beryl a Category 2 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.

Weakening is forecast over the next few days, although Beryl is forecast to remain a hurricane until it makes landfall on the Yucatan Peninsula.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 45 km (28 mi) from the center of the system, and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 260 km (160 mi).
