Birmingham: India’s Olympic medalist and badminton star PV Sindhu will fly the Indian flag at the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games.
Sindhu got this opportunity when India’s javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, the Tokyo Olympics gold medalist and silver medalist at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, withdrew from the Games due to an injury. Earlier, Sindhu was India’s flag bearer at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
The Indian Olympic Association said in a statement that it is happy to select Sindhu as the Indian flag bearer.
Tokyo Olympics medalists weightlifter Mirabai Chanu and boxer Lovelina Borgohen were also considered for the flag-carrying ceremony, but Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medalist, was shortlisted.
