Local elections in Budapest

The non-partisan transport expert Dávid Vitézy entered the official election campaign for Budapest City Hall on Friday.

The former Secretary of State for Transport is running with the support of civil organizations and the green alternative LMP as an alternative to the Left (represented by Mayor Gergely Karácsony) and Fidesz (with top candidate Alexandra Szentkirályi). With his program, Vitézy wants to ban party-political trench warfare from the everyday lives of Budapest residents: “We don’t have time for five more years” of mudslinging of the most primitive political propaganda, which must be replaced by real problem-solving. Creativity must be given space; politics must no longer be limited to the inner districts while the outer districts are neglected.

A pointless wrestling match

He blamed both the government and the city leadership for the lack of major investments – for example to modernize local rail transport. “Budapest is a theater of struggle between the government and the opposition, with a minister János Lázár blocking development funds in one corner and Mayor Gergely Karácsony, who is playing the victim role, in the other,” complained Vitézy.

Jobbik candidate resigns

The announcement by Jobbik’s top candidate Koloman Brenner, who also announced his resignation on Friday in favor of Dávid Vitézy, is more symbolic. The center-right party wanted to use its own candidate to overcome the irreconcilable differences between the camps of Viktor Orbán and Ferenc Gyurcsány. But there is now a guarantor in the race that we would like to support. Jobbik is measured at well below 5% in opinion polls and is traditionally even weaker in the capital.
