no successor for the RTX 4070 GPU

With the GeForce RTX 50 Series, code name Blackwell, NVIDIA would not renew the X04 GPUs. In question: the latest graphics cards to fully exploit theirs, the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti and RTX RTX 3070 Ti, little appreciated.

The next generation of NVIDIA graphics cards, the GeForce RTX 50 Series, are codenamed Blackwell, in reference to David Blackwell. According to an NVIDIA roadmap published last June, the release of these GeForce RTX 5000s would not be scheduled for 2024, but rather for 2025; furthermore, this generation would mark the end of the X04 GPU.

According to data shared by the leaker panzerlied, the Blackwell GPU line would consist of the GPUs – from the most high-end to the most accessible – GB202, GB203, then GB205 and GB206, and finally GB207. As you will have noticed, the GB204 is therefore missing. In fact, the topic on Chiphell has a title that explains this absence: “After three generations of compromise, the X04 has finally completed its historic mission”.

The GB204 was the expected successor to the GP104, TU104, GA104 and AD104 GPUs. The latter equips the GeForce RTX 4070 and GeForce RTX 4070 Ti. In the Pascal era, the GP104 armed several flagship references, the GTX 1070 and 1080, and some GTX 1060.

GPUs for less popular cards

According to our colleague from VideoCardz, the reason why NVIDIA decided to skip the X04 GPUs now would be to look for the RTX 3070 Ti and RTX 4070 Ti: these references, which exploit their entire X04 GPU, do not sell very well. The first suffers from competition from the RX 6800, the second from the RX 7900 XT.

Take the whistleblower’s claims with some caution, however. As reported above, the GeForce RTX 50 Series will not arrive immediately ; while 2025 may seem like too far a window, they shouldn’t be expected until at least the fourth quarter of 2024.
