“No Sharp Rise in Bills: Engie Promises Protection for Gas Consumers Against Market Fluctuation”

Energy supplier Engie has promised that the end of regulated gas prices will not lead to a sharp rise in bills, at least for the current year.

On Friday, June 30, the end of regulated gas tariffs, which until then have allowed consumers to avoid the impact on their bills of high variations in market prices. Since 2014, recalls L’Indépendant, we have observed a reduction of beneficiaries of this system, with a view to compliance with European requirements relating to the opening of energy markets.

Regulated gas prices: 2.3 million current customers

While there are 11 million natural gas consumers in France, less than a sixth of this total, or 2.3 million, remain customers of regulated gas sales tariffs (TRVG). In a little over two months, therefore, this protection will disappear. But for what consequences precisely?

Engie recalls that the tariff shield will protect the French “until the end of 2023”

During a press conference, Florence Fouquet, director of the Engie private market, wanted to be reassuring up to a certain point: “The government has indicated that it will maintain the price shield until the end of 2023. So (…) in the event of an explosion in prices, there is no problem, all French people, whatever either their offer, whatever their supplier, are protected”.

Uncertainties for 2024

“History from 2024, nobody knows it”continued Ms. Fouquet. “Will the government want to put up a shield once more? It will depend a lot on the state of market prices in the second half of 2023”. And for having underlined the possibility of securing fixed prices over several years, on the condition of subscribing to contracts that are more expensive than others.
