The European Fencing Confederation said no Russian or Belarusian athletes took part in qualifying competitions for the Paris Olympics.
From April 26 to 28, qualifying fencing competitions will take place in Luxembourg, where six tickets to the Olympic Games will be played.
“Unfortunately, there are no Russian or Belarusian athletes here. The registration date has passed. The reason for their absence is unknown, there has been no official letter explaining this,” the president of the European Fencing Confederation, Giorgio Scarso, quotes AFP.
In December 2023, the IOC announced the admission to the Olympic Games of athletes from Russia and Belarus in neutral individual status, subject to a number of criteria. At the same time, Russian and Belarusian athletes will not be allowed to attend the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games and will not be mentioned in the medal table.
Earlier, the president of the Russian Fencing Federation, Ilgar Mamedov, said that fencers would not be able to qualify for the Olympics.
“Not a single Russian fencer will go to the Olympics. Our athletes take part in the World Cup stages and Grand Prix – mainly young people who need it to prepare for the BRICS Games and the Friendship Games. Since we are representatives of martial arts, we need an international fight to truly understand our abilities in combat training. Regarding the Olympics, we have stated our principled position – we will not divide the team into those whom the West loves and those who, in their opinion, are “bad Russians” – quote words Mamedova TASS.
At the Tokyo Olympics, Russian athletes won the overall medal standings in fencing, with three gold medals, four silver medals and one bronze medal to their credit.
