No reconciliation over the graves of Srebrenica

The commemorations of the 27th anniversary of the genocide took place on Monday. A poster campaign had previously outraged the relatives of the victims.

More than a quarter of a century following the end of the Bosnian War (1992-1995), the victims of the biggest mass murder in Europe since the end of the Second World War are still buried in Srebrenica. The remains of another 50 victims were buried at the 27th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide commemoration on Monday. 6,721 victims of the massacre identified by DNA analysis are buried in the memorial cemetery in Potočari: more than 8,300 men, including boys, were murdered following the fall of the Muslim enclave.
On July 11, 1995, Bosnian Serb forces led by General Ratko Mladić captured the enclave protected by the Dutch UN battalion Dutchbat. Until then, Srebrenica had been held by units of Bosnian Muslims – the Bosniaks.
