Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Anis Matta has categorically denied any discussions regarding the relocation of Palestinians from Gaza to Indonesia.
“We cannot accept the relocation from Gaza. Reconstruction is not a reason for relocation. Until now, there has been no discussion about that,” he remarked at the Presidential Palace Complex on Wednesday, January 22nd.
Matta emphasized that Indonesia is actively coordinating with various parties to provide humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people in Gaza.
Recent reports from NBC News, a US-based media outlet, cited unnamed US officials suggesting that Donald Trump’s Middle East Envoy, Steve Witkoff, planned to visit Gaza to monitor the ceasefire agreement. the same news piece also indicated that Trump’s team was exploring long-term solutions to the Gaza conflict, including the future of the two million Palestinians residing there.
“Indonesia, for example, is one of the places discussed as a destination (for relocation) for some of (the Gaza residents),” NBC wrote, citing the official.
The Indonesian Foreign Affairs Ministry swiftly issued a statement on January 21st, firmly reiterating that indonesia has no such plans for relocation. They chose to preemptively address the speculation and underscored their unwavering stance against any attempts to relocate Palestinian residents from Gaza.
“indonesia remains firm in its position that any attempt to relocate the people of Gaza is unacceptable,” the ministry emphasized, adding that the relocation plan, if it exists, is highly likely a tactic by Israel to displace Palestinians and perpetuate their illegal occupation of Palestinian territories.
