No one eats alone: Do you know the meaning of this theme day?
Launched in 2012 in schools in the United States by the non-profit organization “Beyond Differences”, the No One Eats Alone (NOEA) day aims to reduce social, ethnic or gender differences and to increase solidarity between young people. children. The idea is to encourage all children to sit and eat together at the table, while chatting and exchanging jokes. This behavior may seem normal, but it promotes real encounters, avoids the exclusion of some and tends to erase the differences that exist in our society.
At the initiative of this action, students anxious to help each other and to go beyond divisions and differences with the intention of making room for others and promoting the inclusion of all. This day is mainly intended for classes with students aged 12 to 16, a pivotal period for the construction of individual identity and where social isolation can be very important and particularly cruel. More than 2,500 American schools take part, which brings to more than one million the number of students who are thus made aware of the reality of social exclusion. However, it should be noted that many other professional or associative circles are now joining this benevolent practice.
