Nintendo Confirms No Hardware Release This Year: What’s Next for Switch 2023?

Since its release in 2017, it has become the Nintendo Switch evolved into one of the most popular consoles on the market. The console has proven to be extremely flexible and portable, allowing gamers to enjoy their favorite games on the go or play them with friends and family at home on the big screen or even in tablet mode. The Switch also has an incredibly impressive library of games, including some of the best games of all time, like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey.
But following 6 years on the market, enthusiasm for the Nintendo Switch has slowly died down, and many fans have been wondering if it’s time for a successor or (another) upgrade. In recent months there have been rumors and speculations regarding a possible Switch Pro, which will come with improved technical specifications and an OLED display.

Nintendo Switch: There will be no new model in 2023
However, Nintendo recently clarified that there will be no successor or upgrade to the Switch this year. Switch sales are down 22 percent year-over-year, suggesting the console has already peaked. Nintendo expects sales to continue to decline over the next 12 months as the Switch nears the end of its life cycle.

New Nintendo console for 2024: However, forecasts for the coming year suggest that Nintendo plans to launch a new console in time for the holiday season in 2024. This is expected by many as Nintendo has historically been fond of releasing new consoles around the holiday season. Piers Harding-Rolls von Ampere Analysis expects that the new The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (release next Friday May 12) will boost hardware sales among those who are upgrading from older versions to the OLED model, as well as some all-new Switch buyers.

Switch remains in focus
How successful can the Nintendo Switch be? Until then, however, the Switch will remain the Japanese company’s main focus and is expected to sell 15 million consoles in the current fiscal year, earning its place as third best-selling console of all time with 140 million consoles sold. Nintendo has proven in the past that it is able to extend the lifecycle of its consoles and keep releasing new content and games for them. Nintendo is expected to announce new games and updates for the Switch in the coming months to keep gamers entertained. A good example is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which has now received countless new routes.
As for Nintendo’s next generation of consoles, the company has had mixed results. The Wii was a smash hit, while the Wii U didn’t fare as well due to a lack of sophistication, as we analyzed in a podcast double-episode.
What’s next for Nintendo? When developing a new console, Nintendo will likely focus on player and developer feedback and want to make sure it’s state-of-the-art. After all, it will be exciting to see whether the new Nintendo console will be backwards compatible.
