Different from the common electrochemical batteries now, the Chinese company Betavolt recently claimed that it has developed the first “nuclear battery” that can be used for medical purposes such as heart rate adjusters. It has the characteristics of miniaturization, modularization and low cost. It also has the characteristics of miniaturization, modularization and low cost. It can be used on mobile phones and does not need to be recharged for 50 years.

How feasible and safe is this technology?

According to the company, nuclear batteries are physical batteries with an energy density more than 10 times that of ternary lithium-ion batteries. 3,300 megawatt-hours can be stored in 1 gram of batteries. They are not afraid of knives and guns and will not catch fire or explode. There is no electrochemical battery yet. The concept of cycle charge and discharge times is because nuclear batteries generate electricity by themselves in 50 years. If nuclear batteries are successfully developed, they will be helpful in implantable medicine or aerospace and other technologies. However, they have not been widely used and studied in the past because radioactive elements such as plutonium are too risky.

Betavolt said that the product combines nickel-63 nuclear isotope decay technology and China’s first diamond semiconductor (4th generation semiconductor) module.

This technology generates electric current through the semiconductor transition of beta particles emitted by a radioactive source of nickel-63. The Betavolt team developed a single-crystal diamond semiconductor that is only 10 microns in size, placing a 2-micron-thick nickel-63 sheet between two diamond semiconductor converters to convert the decay energy of the radioactive source into electrical current.

Betavolt Chairman and CEO Zhang Wei said that BV100 is the world’s first nuclear battery to be mass-produced, with a power of 100 microwatts, a voltage of 3V, and a volume of 15 x 15 x 5 cubic millimeters, which is smaller than a coin. It also plans to launch a 1-watt battery in 2025, saying it can allow a mobile phone to never charge and can be used in aerospace, medical equipment, small drones, sensors and micro-robots.

Betavolt also insists on safety, because when nuclear energy is usually mentioned, radioactive radiation issues come to mind, but the company pointed out that the nuclear battery is suitable for medical equipment such as heart rate adjusters, artificial hearts, and electronic ears. After the nuclear battery decays, the nickel-63 isotope becomes a stable isotope of copper and is non-radioactive.

This technology sounds very powerful. If you want to continue to track the progress of Betavolt and verify the authenticity of the technology, judging from the product progress, the company said that it has entered the pilot stage and is ready to be put into mass production, but there is no date when it will be launched. schedule. Currently, Betavolt has registered a patent in Beijing and will begin to register global PCT patents. Since they claim that the battery can be used in implantable medical devices, it theoretically needs to undergo more stringent safety verification and testing. If it can be approved for commercial use and the plan goes as planned, maybe the technology can be expected?

In 2016, the University of Bristol in the UK also claimed that a battery could theoretically last more than 5,000 years without charging.nuclear batterytechnology, which uses artificial diamonds to coat carbon-14.
