No more braids and see-through sleeves

The decree in North Korea comes from dictator Kim Jong Un, who spotted people from hated neighbor South Korea having their hair styled.

The latest restrictions were revealed in videos where people caught with banned hairstyles were forced to shave their heads, a resident of North Hamgyong province told Radio Free Asia.

North Korea has a long list of fashion bans that include sleeveless shirts, jeans, dyed hair, unwrinkled pants, T-shirts with foreign logos, shoulder bags, shorts and tight tops.

Citizens are also prohibited from having hair below the waist, imitating leader Kim Jong Un’s hairstyle, and wearing high braids, particularly high ponytails with fringes that cover the forehead and one eye.

His daughter Kim Ju Ae recently made a public appearance in a blouse with see-through sleeves, Free Radio Asia reported.

The haircut is subject to strict state approval in North Korea.

Citizens must choose their hairstyles from a list of about 15 government-approved options.

Men should keep their hair short, while women have a wider range of options although all should adhere to a conservative style.

Those caught with unapproved hairstyles risk punishment such as fines, forced labor or even imprisonment.
