Maurizio Lupi extinguishes the controversy over the candidacies of the party leaders in the next European elections. The leader of Noi Moderati, guest of Alessandra Sardoni and her Omnibus on La 7, is asked regarding the debate that has been inflaming commentators in recent weeks: is it right or not for party leaders to run for office and then give up their seats in the ‘European Parliament?
The former infrastructure minister’s response is affirmative. “I am listening with interest to the resurgence of a politics that in my memory has always existed in a limited and small space – says Lupi – all the leaders have always been candidates in the European elections too”. The former vice president of the Chamber goes into more detail: “Basically for two reasons and among other things I shared the candidacy of the leaders in these elections” explains the Milanese politician. Then Lupi completely denies the idea that the leaders’ candidacy is a mockery of the citizen: “There is no single preference and therefore the vote would be wasted – he explains – I vote Tajani at that point my vote is not valid as preference. No! I can vote for three preferences and therefore whoever is elected is a nobody. Those candidates chosen by the voters of that list who have approval and are considered most credible are elected.”
Lupi continues: “Leaders have always run for the European elections for two fundamental reasons. The first – which is what the leader of We Moderates hopes – is to underline how these elections are fundamental.” And then, explains the former Forza Italia deputy, a historical fact: the leaders “should get more people to participate. Can I give an example that makes it easier for me? – asks Lupi who then concludes –. Renzi’s personalization of the constitutional referendum. To what extent did the participation of Italians in the vote lead? Such an incredible and crazy result. Renzi was wrong to personalize but that is a choice.” A choice that can also be reproduced in the next elections by the party leaders: “On one condition however, that we talk regarding Europe” comments Lupi.
