No Man’s Sky will receive a major 4.0 update in early October

Expedition 8: Polestar is long overdue and No Man’s Sky fans are eagerly awaiting news of the next update and possibly the next Expedition as the two often go hand in hand. Usually around this time we get some cryptic emojis from Hello Games studio head Sean Murray, but this time Murray was blunt about when to expect the update.

No Man’s Sky Switch releases October 7th – very soon. Switch is our next big release and will mark the transition of No Man’s Sky to version 4.0.

Announced back in February, Hello Games said the Switch version of No Man’s Sky will include all the updates from the last six years, but it won’t feature multiplayer. Murray called porting the game to Switch “a real stroke of luck for our small team,” explaining in a past interview that it was incredibly difficult to get No Man’s Sky to run on Switch’s modest hardware.

No Man’s Sky is built on procedural generation, which means the console generates whatever you see. This makes it much more difficult to port our game to a console like the Switch, but I think this team never looks happier than when they’re trying to do the near-impossible.

As for what we can expect in version 4.0, we can only guess. Given that it will be released at the same time as the Switch version of No Man’s Sky, and that the Switch version won’t have a multiplayer feature, expect the update to add features that don’t require other players to really shine. One can also expect the ninth expedition, which will be the same lonely affair.
