No Kim Yeon-kyung, time to roll rocks[김태훈의 챕터투]

Disappointing women’s volleyball team shuts out for 4 consecutive weeks in VNL

The followingmath of leader Kim Yeon-kyung’s absence is clearly revealed… Criticism is also high

It is a common opinion of coaches and players who have gone through the national team that “it is unfortunate that there is no leader who has to raise the concentration of players and act as a solver in the midst of a crisis.”

The Korean women’s volleyball team (16th in world ranking), without Kim Yeon-kyung, who announced her retirement from the national team, accepted the disastrous score of four consecutive shutouts in the first week of the FIVB Volleyball Nations League (VNL).

“Let’s do it! Let’s do it!! No regrets!!!” and exclaimed, “Leader” Yeon-Kyung Kim, who united the players with her charisma and skills, is clearly showing the void. Stefano Lavarini (Poland manager), the ‘old teacher’ who led the myth of Korean women’s volleyball quarterfinals at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, also took care of facial expressions following defeating Korea in the 3rd game.

That is why Korean women’s volleyball is in a dark situation.

There are only three members (Jung-A Park, Hee-Jin Kim, Hye-Seon Yeom) who are in the semifinals of the Tokyo Olympics, with veterans in their early to mid-30s, including Kim Yeon-kyung and Yang Hyo-jin and Kim Su-ji, missing. The struggle in this tournament, which is played in the midst of a rapid generational change, was expected, but it is too helpless. If the performance of the first week is the same, it can only be reduced to a point vending machine. Their fighting spirit seems weak compared to Japan and Thailand.

As the FIVB abolished the qualifying system for each continent starting from the Paris Olympics, ranking management must be thorough in order to qualify for the Olympics. If you are behind Thailand, not Japan, you will not be able to qualify for the Olympics. The serious slump in VNL is the opposite of Kim Yeon-kyung’s request, “I hope that her juniors will protect the status that she has built up with difficulty at the Paris Olympics.” There is even a sense of crisis that Korean women’s volleyball might fall into a dark period.

“In the absence of Kim Yeon-kyung, the value of Kim Yeon-kyung will shine even more”, “Kim Yeon-kyung is a player who only comes out once in 100 years”, “It is unreasonable to wait for the birth of a superstar like Kim Yeon-kyung.” This is not the time to wait for the new Kim Yeon-kyung to appear. Such superstars are hard to come by right now. We have to admit that there is no Kim Yeon-kyung and prepare for it.

It is true that the will to enter the overseas market has weakened as the domestic league is successful and the salary rises thanks to the Kim Yeon-kyung effect and good results on the international stage. Even among volleyball fans who watched the disastrous results of the first week, such criticisms are coming out. Accordingly, the Korea Volleyball Federation (KOVO) is also reviewing fresh stimulating materials that will enhance its competitiveness.

Healthy stimulation is essential, but excessive criticism towards the national team should be refrained from in a time of rapid generational change. It’s been a while since I’ve trained as a full body. You don’t have much time, but if you put down your patience and are busy ‘defeating the national team’, it’s ‘no answer’.

New coach Cesar said, “There is a very big rock in front of us,” while taking the helm of the women’s volleyball team. Even if you push the rock at first, it won’t move well. It will be difficult, but we have to keep pushing. “Once you start pushing, you can roll,” he said. Now there is no Kim Yeon-kyung, and there is no Yang Hyo-jin. Give it time to push the rock and writhe. With the same heart to protect the status of Korean women’s volleyball.
