No injuries.. successive tremors hit the Middle East

On Wednesday morning, several countries in the Middle East witnessed successive earthquakes, without causing any injuries.

Iraq

According to the Iraqi news agency “INA”:

  • The Meteorology and Seismic Monitoring Authority in Iraq recorded an earthquake, on Wednesday morning, with a magnitude of 4.5 in Nineveh Governorate, in the north of the country.
  • The earthquake was recorded at 10:09:12 local time, 39 km southwest of Hatra District, Nineveh Governorate.
  • The tremor was felt by the citizens at the scene with varying feelings.”
  • No losses were reported.

Lebanon

According to the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Institute in Lebanon:

  • The tremor hit the eastern Mediterranean off the country’s southern coast.
  • The magnitude of the earthquake was 4.2 on the Richter scale.
  • Some residents of the Lebanese coastal areas felt the tremor for the second day in a row.

Palestine

According to the Palestinian News Agency:

  • The tremor hit the north of the country and lasted 10 seconds.
  • It had a magnitude of 4.2, on the Richter scale.
  • The tremor struck at a depth of 18 km, east of the Mediterranean Sea.
  • Citizens from different governorates of the West Bank felt the tremor.

Iran

According to the official IRNA agency:

  • An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale struck the village of “Darz” in Fars Governorate, southwest of the country.
  • The earthquake occurred at 4:41 am today, Wednesday, at a depth of 11 km from the ground.
  • The tremor occurred 113 km northwest of Bandar Abbas in the south of the country.
  • The earthquake in Laristan did not cause any casualties.

These successive tremors come following the devastating earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale, which struck southern Turkey and northern Syria, at dawn on Monday, February 6.

The earthquake in Turkey and Syria caused massive human losses (more than 47,000 dead in both countries), and led to the destruction of thousands of buildings, including schools, health care facilities and other public infrastructure.
