INDONESIAN citizens (WNI) in the UK have not been seriously affected by the widespread unrest. Moreover, many areas in the country of Queen Elizabeth are in a relatively conducive security condition.
“As of today, no Indonesian citizens have been seriously affected by the wave of actions in England and hopefully there will be none. If we dissect it more deeply, the issue is targeting Muslims, especially from South Asia. So in general, Indonesian Muslims are relatively safe,” said the Chairman of the Nahdlatul Ulama Special Branch (PCINU) England Rosyid Jazuli to Media Indonesia, Tuesday (6/8).
However, said the doctoral student, various organizations such as NU in England and Muhammadiyah have appealed to their respective congregations to remain vigilant. But, basically, the condition of England is also still safe.
In fact, he continued, schools and shopping centers remain open. It’s just that in some areas, he said, the conditions are a bit tense because the demonstrations are anarchic.
Several demonstrations started outside London and since Monday (5/8) there have been rumors that they will enter London. Various groups and communities have begun to remind their members or citizens to remain vigilant.
“The Indonesian Embassy in London also quickly issued a warning to Indonesian citizens in the UK,” he added.
Regarding the targets of the demonstrators, he said it was generally true that mosques and Muslims were their targets. But it should be noted that the beginning of this wave of demonstrations was initially due to misinformation about the stabbing of children by Muslim youths.
“In fact, it has been proven that the perpetrators were non-Muslim British people of African descent. But back to the previous point, in general life in the UK (United Kingdom) remains relatively normal. Riots and looting occurred in only a few points and for a short time. Local authorities took quick steps to calm the situation,” he concluded. (Cah)
