No email, no delivery: a client denounces the treatment received at Canac

A Canac customer in the west of Sherbrooke, in the Eastern Townships, was refused the delivery of materials because he did not want to leave his email address to the business.

Marc Tremblay denounces the treatment received by the Quebec hardware store, which apologized on Wednesday.

“My email is personal information that does not concern them at all. Having me refuse service because I don’t want to leave my email doesn’t make sense,” laments Mr. Tremblay.

The client, who is doing renovations in his house, went on Monday to the Canac hardware store located on Bourque Boulevard in Sherbrooke.

He says he bought regarding $2,000 worth of materials.

Once at the checkout, the clerk asked her for her email address.

“Why my email? They have my postal address, my telephone number and my name, it seems to me that is more than enough. I asked to speak to the store manager and he also told me that no email, no delivery. I mightn’t believe it. I abandoned the transaction and left the business, ”says the man to TVA Nouvelles.

The Quebec Act respecting the protection of personal information in the private sector stipulates that “no one may refuse to comply with a request for goods or services or a request relating to employment because of the refusal of the person making the request. to provide him with personal information, except if the collection is necessary for the conclusion or performance of the contract”.

Marc Tremblay turned to the Rona hardware store.

“They came to deliver this morning and I didn’t have to give them my email address.”

TVA Nouvelles called the Canac branch on Bourque Boulevard on Wednesday and the clerk clearly indicated that without an email address, delivery was impossible.

“Email is now the basis of our communications with customers, but this kind of situation should not have arisen,” comments the marketing director at Canac’s head office, Patrick Delisle. This is a store that has been overzealous and we are sorry for that. I can assure you that a customer who refuses to leave his email address or who does not have one can obtain our delivery service.
