A Rio de Janeiro’s city hall published a decree this Monday (7) in the Official Gazette that Prohibits the use of cell phones during classes of the municipal network. Likewise, the measure is valid for other technological devices, such as tablets. Secretary of Education Renan Ferreirinha commented:

It’s like the student leaves the room every time he sees a notification. There’s no way to pay attention and learn fully like that. In addition, school is a place for socialization and being on the cell phone interferes with social coexistence

Also according to the secretary, this action is related to UNESCO’s 2023 Global Education Monitoring Report. According to the organ, the time of exposure to the screen is linked to the worsening of well-being, self-discipline, less curiosity and emotional stability of children.

According to the decision, the use of devices is no longer allowed inside or outside classes, in case of group or individual work being carried out. However, if the purpose is educational, students will be able to use their devices if the teacher gives permission.

It is worth mentioning that the measure does not apply to students who have health problems or have a disability in which it is necessary to use the aid devices or do some type of monitoring. When the items are allowed to be used, they must be on silent.
