Composed of the Zurich skip Silvana Tirinzoni (42 years old), the Bernese Melanie Barbezat (30 years old) as well as the Zurich residents Alina Paetz (31 years old) and Esther Neuenschwander (38 years old), CC Aarau did not manage to take bronze at the end of the final for third place in the Olympic tournament, which takes place at the National Aquatics Center in Beijing.

On Saturday, the reigning world champions experienced a second disappointment in 24 hours. After losing to skip Chinami Yoshida’s Japanese in the semi-finals (8-6), they lost to Sweden’s Anna Hasselborg in the duel for the last available medal following lacking precision and accumulating the errors (9-7).

They therefore did not join the two Swiss women’s teams to have reached a podium adorned with the rings once dear to Pierre de Coubertin: the team of Luzia Ebnöther in 2002 in Salt Lake City (2nd) and that of Mirjam Ott in 2006 in Torino (2nd).

Three teams, no podium

Nor did they lessen the disappointment of the Swiss Curling Federation, whose three squads returned home empty-handed. A balance sheet that remains far from the initial goal which was to uncork one or two bottles of champagne in the Olympic bubble.

With this “chocolate”, Swiss Olympic has not (yet?) achieved its ambitious goal of winning 15 necklaces in China.

While the Games will be closed on Sunday, the Swiss athletes have been decorated with seven gold medals, two silver and five bronze.

The Swiss sports umbrella body can still achieve this. On the last day of competitions, from 2 a.m., its representatives will be among the favorites of the Alpine Skiing Team Event if the weather permits.
