PORTLAND, Oregon – The Nissan Formula E Team finished round 12 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, season 2022/2023, with points. Pilot Norman Nato took 9th place in the category’s first visit to the city of Portland, in the United States.
Sacha Fenestraz and Norman Nato started in the top 3 of the grid, following the team had shown excellent pace in qualifying. The pair of riders were racing in group A and showed all their strength right from the start with Fenestraz finishing 1st and Nato 3rd in the group. The two won the duels in the quarterfinals and faced each other in the semifinals for the second time this season, with the French-Argentinian progressing to the final phase.
After a chaotic start to the race, the duo fought for the lead in the first few laps, but a contact meant that Fenestraz had to pit to put a new wing on the car. Nato was leading and showed strong speed, however the disorderly race caused changes in positions following he activated Attack Mode a second time. Even so, he managed to score at the end of the race, taking 9th place. Meanwhile, despite struggling to recover following being pitted, Fenestraz crossed the finish line in 15th.
Formula E returns to racing on the 15th and 16th of July, when the category visits the city of Rome for the penultimate race weekend of this season.
Tommaso Volpe, general manager and head of the Nissan Formula E team:
“This weekend was challenging; we got a great result in qualifying and showed how fast we can be, but the race was chaotic. A small contact compromised Sacha’s test. Norman, on the other hand, led several laps, but did not have the pace in the car to stay in the lead and lost some positions. We didn’t score as many points as we’d hoped, but we have to think on the positive side. Our car was fast in qualifying and from tomorrow our attention turns to the next race in Rome.”
Norman Nato:
“We had great pace in qualifying today and I was really pleased with the one-lap performance of the car. The race was tough because everyone was stuck in a big pack. It was very difficult to manage the energy, especially in the lead, which caused a lot of action with lateral maneuvers because nobody wanted to stay in front. Today we didn’t have the pace to reach the podium, but considering that we started in 3rd our target was definitely higher than 9th place, even though we were satisfied with the points”.
Sacha Fenestraz:
“We once once more had incredible speed in qualifying. To lead a strong group and reach the final for the third time this season is a huge achievement for me and I’m very happy with our one-lap performance. It was a difficult race, this track layout is not ideal for Formula E cars, so everyone was stuck in a big pack for most of the race because nobody wanted to lead and waste energy. I made a small mistake, I locked up and damaged the front wing, so I had to pit for a replacement. After that it was difficult to recover, but we’re going to take the positive side of qualifying and move on with our focus on Rome”.
