ÖVP space spokeswoman will host the European Interparliamentary Space Conference (EISC) taking place in Austria tomorrow, September 25, 2023

Vienna (OTS) “The European Interparliamentary Space Conference, which is taking place this year under the Austrian presidency in the parliament in Vienna, is one thing above all: a great opportunity. Because it can be an important source of inspiration for Europe’s future role in the commercial use of space,” said ÖVP space spokeswoman Therese Niss is also chair of the conference. Especially once morest the background of climate change and the opportunities that “green technologies” offer, Europe is called upon to increase its commitment here. “The goal should be to serve a third of the world market for commercial use of space in the medium term,” said the People’s Party representative.

Austria has already contributed to the European Space Agency (ESA) with its “Green Transition Information Factory” project. Niss: “Data collected in space was processed and used to prevent climate change in various areas. Due to the constantly and rapidly developing satellite technology, the possible uses range from the energy sector to mobility and urban development.”

The EISC 2023 – which will take place tomorrow in the parliament building on Vienna’s Ringstrasse – opens up space for synergies in Europe and enables exchange between national parliaments, government organizations as well as business and science once morest the background of commercial use of space. In addition to experts from science and business, National Council President Wolfgang Sobotka, Federal Minister Leonore Gewessler, ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher and Carmen Possnig – who is an Austrian member of the ESA Reserve Astronaut Corps – will also have their say.

Niss concludes: “The use of space in commercial terms and the increased use of corresponding technology will continue to play an increasingly important role in the future – whether for central needs such as housing and mobility, nature or the economy. I am therefore particularly pleased that “We will be able to take up the resulting challenges tomorrow at the EISC 2023 in Vienna and work on Europe’s importance for the use of space. Last but not least, there is also immense potential here for our Austrian companies.” (Ending)
