Ninth day of the World Cup: Mihambo flies into the long jump final without any problems

Top favorite Malaika Mihambo has reached the long jump final of the World Championships in Athletics without any problems. In the decathlon, however, the German athletes are still struggling. The ninth day of competition in Eugene at a glance.

High jump women’s qualification: Mihambo sovereign

Germany’s great hope for gold, Malaika Mihambo, started her World Cup weekend in Eugene with a commanding performance. In the long jump qualification, the Olympic champion and defending champion jumped 6.84 m in the first attempt and easily surpassed the 6.75 m required for the final on Monday (2:50 a.m. CEST). “That was the goal. Everything worked out the way we imagined it,” said Mihambo: “I felt very good, it was a good competition.” The 28-year-old indicated her potential, dropping a proud 17 centimeters when she took off.

The best of the year, Brooke Buschkuehl (Australia), also qualified for the final with a jump of 6.76 m. The best of the qualification was the American Quanesha Burks, who jumped 6.86 m – but only on the third attempt. Merle Homeier (Göttingen) was well below her personal best with 6.09 m and is not in the final.

Decathlon: DLV athletes are still struggling

After the first three disciplines of the decathlon, defending champion Niklas Kaul is in 20th and penultimate place in the interim ranking with 2,407 points. 11.22 seconds over 100 m, 7.13 m in the long jump and 14.52 m in the shot put were mediocre performances. However, Kaul is considered a man of the second day with his special strength in the javelin throw. Olympic champion Damian Warner (Canada) has so far lived up to his role as favorite (2,846), while French world record holder Kevin Mayer is fifth (2,680).

As the best German, surprisingly, World Cup debutant Leo Neugebauer took ninth place (2,611). Former World Cup bronze medalist Kai Kazmirek is 13th with 2,497 points, Tim Nowak from Ulm is currently last (2,367).

100 m hurdles women heats: defending champion Nia Ali is eliminated

Defending champion Nia Ali surprisingly missed the semi-finals over 100 m hurdles. The American stumbled and only crossed the finish line following 19.73 seconds.

The fastest was Nigerian Tobi Amusan, who set an African record of 12.40 seconds. With Alia Armstrong from the USA (12.48), Olympic champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn from Puerto Rico (12.52), Jamaican Britany Anderson (12.59) and world record holder Kendra Harrison (12.60), the other favorites did not give up Nakedness. The semi-finals (2.10 a.m. CEST) and finals (4 a.m. CEST) will take place on Monday night.

Six finals on Sunday night

Six finals are scheduled for the night. It starts at 3 a.m. CEST with the men’s triple jump, followed on the track by the men’s 800 m (3.10 a.m. CEST) and the women’s 5,000 m (3.25 a.m. CEST) – each without German participation.

In the men’s javelin final (from 3.35 a.m. CEST) Julian Weber might provide the long-awaited first German medal. In the relay final over 4×100 m (4.30 a.m. CEST), the German women have outsider chances, the German men’s quartet was eliminated in the preliminary heat.
