Nintendo: there will be no new Mario games for smartphones

Mario’s next adventures will not take place on mobile platforms. Shigeru Miyamoto, legendary creator of Nintendo’s mascot, revealed to Variety that mobile applications will not be the “ main track for future Mario games. In other words: there will be no more new mobile games featuring the famous plumber.

Mario has however tried his luck on iOS and Android, with varying success: Super Mario Run (2016), Mario Kart Tour (2019) and Dr. Mario World (2019). The first had relatively modest success, the second is a card boosted with micro-transactions, the third was disconnected in November 2021. The publisher will continue to invest in mobile platforms, but it will be with other franchises (it will no lack of it). Super Mario Run and Mario Kart Tour also remain, of course, fully available on the App Store and Play Store.

The game designer explain that ” offering Mario games as mobile apps has opened the door for a much wider audience to experience [la licence]they also expand the Mario game experience »: Mario titles were indeed designed to be played with one finger. ” These intuitive controls are part of the gaming experience. We had a hard time figuring out what a mobile game should be, so I took on the role of director for Super Mario Run, to be able to translate the Nintendo hardware experience in smartphones ».
