Game news Nintendo Switch: This video game runs at less than 30 frames per second … and the developers assume

The Nintendo Switch is not known to be the most powerful console on the market. Still, most developers manage to deliver smooth gaming experiences at a minimum of 30 frames per second. But for some, the technical concessions are more important, which gives an astonishing result… and assumed.
The Dark Pictures, a new reference in horror?
To everyone’s surprise, The Dark Pictures: Man of Medan has been available since yesterday on Nintendo Switch. This is an unexpected port since this version had never been announced before, not even by its publisher Bandai Namco. And in case you didn’t follow, The Dark Pictures Anthology is a project consisting of several interactive horror and survival games which emphasize cooperation between players and choices that have a decisive impact on the fate of the characters. These experiences are developed by Supermassive Games who made a name for themselves in the horror games genre with Until Dawn.
If Man of Medan is the first episode of this anthology, three other adventures have since followed: Little Hope, House of Ashes and The Devil In Me. While all these titles were released a year apart, this does not prevent the developers to work on other side projects like The Quarry. Over time, the studio’s games have made a name for themselves for their cinematic side and their numerous references to the seventh art, as well as for the graphics that want to be as realistic as possible. Inevitably, when we learn that one of them will be ported to Switch, there is reason to be surprised… and rightly so.

A Switch version at a discount… and assumed!
As you can see in the trailer at the top of the page, the Supermassive Games teams had to revise the graphics of their game downwards to hope to see it running on Nintendo Switch. If this downgrade is not surprising given the power of the console, we are however much more surprised when we discover a mention on the eShop page of the game. Black on white, it is written there that The Dark Pictures: Man of Medan runs at 24 frames per second on Nintendo Switchwell below the 30 fps which is the minimum that gamers have always been used to.
Quite surprisingly, 24 frames per second corresponds to the frame rate of films shown in the cinema. And since The Dark Pictures Anthology titles are almost interactive feature films, the rationale might almost hold. But in reality, a video game experience at less than 30 fps really feels and can create an unpleasant lag to the eye. Added to that the less detailed graphics and it would have been hard to recommend this Switch version if you have other game media. In any case, you can form your own opinion by watching the trailer at the top of the page.
