Available since March 2017, the Switch is a real planetary cardboard. Even better, Nintendo’s latest console has managed to become a social phenomenon. With nearly 110 million consoles sold in just five years, the machine is already in the top 5 best-selling video game consoles in history. A success that should continue in the months to come with all the big games on the program (Mario Strikers Football, Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Splatoon 3, Bayonetta 3 and the sequel to Zelda Breath of the Wild…).
According to Nintendo, the Switch is currently at half of its life cycle. However, this does not prevent the manufacturer from already preparing for the future so as not to repeat the same mistakes!
The Switch: do not reproduce the errors of the Wii and the DS
What do the Game Boy Color (1998), Nintendo DS (2005), Wii (2006) and Switch (2017) have in common? These are the four biggest successes of Nintendo. Alas, the Japanese manufacturer almost missed its generation that followed these successful machines.
In addition to the Game Boy Advance, which is doing relatively well compared to the Game Boy, the other consoles did not have the expected performance, the fault of a laborious communication from Big N. The 3DS sold half as much that the DS and the Wii U will be a monumental flop with only 13.5 million machines sold ( once morest 101.6 million for the Wii).
So, given the incredible success of the Switch, everyone is a little afraid of the sequel, starting with Nintendo itself. Shuntaro Furukawa, the current president of Nintendo even dreads this moment. During a recent interview, Furukawa confides that he wishes to avoid the fiasco that there was following the DS or the Wii.
For him, the post-switch is “a major concern”. As he explains, following the experiences of the Wii and the DS, “it is very clear that one of the main questions is how to easily switch from one platform to another”. According to Shuntaro Furukawa, to limit the risk of failure, Nintendo must focus “on building long-term relationships with customers”. Society must continue “to launch new games on the Nintendo Switch”but also offer “services that use Nintendo Accounts and other non-game intellectual property”.
After three similar errors, we hope that Nintendo will finally manage to succeed two console generations in a row!
