Update (01/24/2024) – HA

Nintendo confirmed the closure of online gaming services for 3DS and Wii U on April 8th. This shutdown will include online cooperative play, internet rankings and data distribution

The only exceptions that will not be immediately affected by this closure are the Pokémon Bank and Poké Transporter. However, Nintendo said online services “may also end at some point in the future.”

For other non-Nintendo releases with online features, the company asks users to contact the game publisher directly.

Players will still be able to play on their devices offline after online services end. You will also be able to download update data, redownload purchased software and downloadable content from the Nintendo eShop, but new purchases cannot be made.

The company also stated that StreetPass will still be available, as it uses “local communication between Nintendo 3DS family systems”. SpotPass, however, will not be available, as it depends on online communication to function.

With this move to close a batch of the company’s consoles, speculation about the proximity of a new device increases.

Nintendo Wii U and 3DS console users will not have a Christmas miracle this year. According to information, the Japanese company began to end support for online games on these models in this penultimate week of 2023. The expectation was that this would only happen from April of next yearbut the company appears to have reversed its decision.

According to the Nintendo Life portal, the server shutdown has not yet affected all titles compatible with online gameplay, so it is still possible to continue enjoying the feature for a while longer. This change continues the closure of the eShop in March this year, making new purchases impossible.

With the closure of the virtual store in March 2023, the owners of the Nintendo Wii U and 3DS could only download games already purchased and saved to the account. Now, the restriction is more severe, preventing Internet connection to play with friends, which marks the end of an era for two of the Asian giant’s most popular video games.

This decision, however, is not exclusive to Nintendo. In August this year, Microsoft confirmed that the Xbox 360 store, a console that sold more than 85 million units in more than a decade of history, will close in July 2024 — but you will be able to continue playing your favorite games.
