For many, the Nintendo eShop is far from the best online store. Lots of experiments, ranging from the modest to the downright avoidable, mixed in with some very interesting productions, whether independent or big-budget. On the other hand, the games are all associated with a PEGI corresponding to the experience… Or almost.

PEGI, an informative tool taken seriously by online stores on the manufacturer side

Like Microsoft and Sony, Nintendo has its own online store where it is possible to buy your games digitally. Various tabs allow you to find games according to their release date, current offers, rankings, or filters to activate. It’s sometimes difficult to navigate, but overall, we manage to find the games we’re looking for. While there are thousands of games, varying greatly in price and quality, they have all have in common the fact of having obtained a classificationwhether it is the PEGI in Europe, the ESRB in the United States, or the CERO in Japan.

Generally, this classification is provided for information purposes only and allows buyers to have a quick overview of the type of content that can be found in a game, and from what age it is recommended. However, it remains quite important for online stores, and in particular on game consoles. Indeed, the PEGI allows parental control tools to sort, so that experiences that are not intended for a certain audience appear. So, when a game does not obtain the correct classification, which is extremely rare, it poses a big problem.

A game dealing with alcoholism ends up on PEGI 3 by mistake

The case recently occurred on the eShop, with a title called Need for Spirit: Drink & Drive Simulator, and released on October 15 on the platform. Developed by Atomic Fabrik, the title focuses on a professional driver battling his alcoholism while delivering alcohol for various evenings. Extremely weak technically and sold for around 2 euros on the eShop, the title would probably never have been talked regarding if he had not received a PEGI 3+ by mistakethat is to say it was classified as being general public.

However, a game that clearly displays alcohol or drug consumption cannot be PEGI 3+. Released on Steam and the Epic Games Store several years ago, it should have been classified PEGI 16. According to Eurogamer, the problem probably comes from the IARC, the International Age Rating Coalition, which assigns a classification for free so that developers can submit their games to the platforms. PEGI stated that the game had been put under investigation before being assigned the correct PEGI, and that the eShop page had been deleted.

The classification body, however, indicated that this did not allow the immediate return of the game to the store. Indeed, Nintendo requires that any game that has been removed or changed classification must be resubmitted for evaluation. The goal is to ensure that the games in question have the correct PEGI, so that parental control tools can do their job properly. Contacted by our colleagues, Nintendo has not yet reacted on this subject.
