Dragons: The Nine Kingdoms is a sequel to Dreamwork’s flagship series How to train your dragon series. Set 1300 years following the events of the films, the dragons have long been forgotten by mankind. But when a strange crack mysteriously opens in the earth’s crust, four children are swept away as their parents are tasked with studying the new anomaly. But it’s the kids who make the biggest discovery of all, dragons have been hiding underground for years, and it looks like they’re ready to spread their wings!

John Tellegen is credited as showrunner and executive producer for Dragons: The Nine Kingdoms. Alongside him are Chuck Austen and Henry Gilroy as executive producers. Beth Sleven is also recognized as a supervising producer. The series also stars Jeremy Shada, Julia Stiles, Haley Joel Osment, Marcus Scribner, Aimee Garcia, Ashley Liao, Lauren Tom, Keston John, Justina Machado, and D’arcy Carden.

More dragons, more to explore!

If you weren’t there for Season 2, it ended on a major cliffhanger! When Thunder disappears, the Dragon Riders set out to find him. During their journey to find him, Tom reveals a big secret to the others. Earlier in the series, Thunder carved a very familiar symbol on the cave walls. Tom confirms that it matches the symbol painted on a family heirloom, an ancient Viking helmet. This confirms that Tom and Thunder are somehow related. Although, while official Dreamworks social media lists Thunder as a direct descendant of Toothless, this is the closest hint the public has gotten that Tom might be a descendant of Hiccup (he bears a few similar traits to Astrid).

After finding Thunder, it is revealed that he was looking for the dragon that separated him from his family. The group comes face to face with a dragon longtime fans would recognize, the Skrill! This species of dragon was first introduced by passing the first How to train your dragonbut was brought in as a formidable foe in Dragons: Defenders of Berk. This threat still lingers all these years later, with this Skrill and Thunder continuing the age-old battle. With the help of the other Horsemen, Thunder and Tom manage to outrun the Skrill and scare it away into a new region of the Hidden World, covered in lava. The group swears to help Tom unravel the mystery of his family, as well as help Thunder find his lost tribe.

Judging by the trailer, we’re going to see even more familiar dragons! From the brief clips, we see such familiar dragons as the Monstrous Nightmare, Fire Worms, and Gronkles! June’s brother Eugene is also going to pose a threat, as well as Buzzsaw. As dragon riders continue to explore the hidden world deeper, dragons continue to push their own limits and come to our world! Will the dragons be on display? Will we discover the connection between Tom’s family and the dragons? We will have to wait until August 18 to find out, get in the saddle!
