According to the fire brigade, two double-decker coaches collided on Wednesday evening in the industrial center of Lower Austria South, in the municipality of Laxenburg (Mödling district): nine people were injured, one of them seriously, as the Mödling district fire brigade command announced on Thursday. So far, the cause of the rear-end collision is still unclear. At the time of the collision, both buses were occupied by 60 people.
The Laxenburg volunteer fire brigade was alerted shortly following 6 p.m. The injured were given first aid by the fire and rescue services. However, the seriously injured person might not get off the bus from the upper floor himself. It also might not be carried down the narrow stairs inside the vehicle. For this reason, a special rescue platform was positioned and an access opening was created using hydraulic rescue equipment. The person was then transferred to a spineboard and lifted off the bus.
With the help of a crane vehicle from the Lower Austrian fire brigade association, stationed at the Mödling fire brigade, the buses involved in the accident were safely parked off the roadway in an adjacent parking lot. Nine vehicles and 36 emergency services from two fire departments were deployed. The ambulance service and the police were also on duty.
There had already been a serious bus accident in early August. 18 people were injured in the accident on the German Autobahn 2 near Peine, east of Hanover. The coach went off the road on the way from Austria to Norway and overturned.
