Nincshof: A Tale of Disappearing Villages and the Longing for Freedom

2023-09-21 01:34:26

Everything should be like it used to be in the Burgenland village of “Nincshof” on the Hungarian border. Legend has it that Nincshof used to lie hidden in the reeds for centuries, unnoticed by the environment. Three men long to go back to this time in secret and do everything they can to make Nincshof disappear from the map and from the world’s consciousness. It is no coincidence that the Hungarian word “nincs” means “it does not exist” in German.

In her debut novel “Nincshof” Johanna Sebauer tells of the longing for freedom and peace in times when the greatest possible visibility and attention are considered particularly desirable.

Johanna Sebauer grew up in Burgenland and lives in Hamburg. She published short stories in anthologies and received several literary prizes and residency grants. Her debut novel “Nincshof” was published by DuMont.
