Nils Hoglander signed a two-year, $2.2 million contract with the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday. He will pocket an annual salary of $1.1 million.

The 22-year-old forward, who was a restricted free agent, had nine points (three goals, six assists) in 25 games with the Vancouver Canucks last season before being demoted to the Abbotsford Canucks on Vancouver farm club in the American Hockey League (AHL).

In Abbotsford, he had 32 points (14 goals, 18 assists) in 45 games. He added six points (three goals, three assists) in six AHL playoff games.

“Nils learned a lot over the last season, especially playing important playoff games at Abbotsford,” Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin said. “It’s not easy to start the season in the NHL and be demoted to the American League, but we were very impressed with the way he accepted this challenge. He’s worked hard on his game, and credit has to be given to Jeremy Colliton (the Abbotsford coach), his staff and our development team for helping Nils improve in some areas over the year. This experience should go a long way towards helping Nils compete for a spot with our team in training camp this fall. »

Drafted by Vancouver in the second round (40th overall) in 2019, Hoglander has 54 points (26 goals, 28 assists) in 141 career regular season games.

The Canucks (38-37-7) finished sixth in the Pacific Division and missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs for a third consecutive season.

Since the opening of the free agent market on July 1, they have signed defenders Carson Soucy (three years) and Ian Cole (one year) as well as forward Teddy Blueger (one year).
