Praises the four-wheel drive – on electricity: “I get a bit of a V8 feeling when I drive”

Ulf Jonsson makes long trips with a heavy trailer at least two weekends a month on the most demanding Swedish roads.

With Mazda’s flagship model, the plug-in hybrid CX-60, he has never encountered any problems.

– We have never gone bet. The four-wheel drive in combination with the strong engine means that I don’t even have to switch on the off-road mode, he says.

Just this weekend, Ulf Jonsson from Stockholm is in Stora Blåsjön riding a scooter. He and his wife usually go here or to Edsbyn in Hälsingland regularly. On the roads to Stora Blåsjön, which is located in northern Jämtland, a strong and reliable car is required.

– The four-wheel drive must be very good. You don’t want to start skidding on slopes with a snowmobile trailer. In addition, a strong engine is needed, which the Mazda CX-60 with its 327 horsepower definitely has.

At the same time, Ulf Jonsson experiences that the car is fuel efficient for its size.

– Now when I drove up to Stora Blåsjön in the middle of winter with studded tires and scooter on the trailer, it drew 0.8 liters per mile. He doesn’t have to work as hard on uphills, and I get a bit of a V8 feeling when I drive.

On weekdays, Ulf Jonsson runs his own company in the construction industry and he often takes the car to work. He bought the Mazda CX-60, his third Mazda, in October. When it came time to buy a new one, he was looking for a strong plug-in hybrid that would suit his driving style.

– Driving entirely on electricity was not relevant for our habits. I looked at three models from other manufacturers but the strong engine, four wheel drive and 2500kg towing weight made the choice easy in the end. We are also very confident with Mazda.

Mazda’s generous warranty in ten years feels very good, thinks Ulf Jonsson.

– Buying a new car costs quite a lot of money. The Mazda CX-60 is affordable, but it’s still a big investment. For us, everything has only worked so far, but should it be something on a new model, it feels safe that Mazda will cover the costs in the event of a recall, he says.

Another reason why the choice fell on the Mazda CX-60 is the driving feeling.

– You become one with the car. It is extremely fun to drive.

In normal mode, the Mazda CX-60 does 0-100 in 5.8 seconds.

– Despite the car’s size, I think it drives like a Mazda Miata. Cornering is gallant and it’s so sporty to drive that it’s almost creepy.

– Sometimes I go out and drive just because it’s fun. And also on electricity, which means that my pleasure rides are always fossil-free.

Ulf Jonsson drives in Stockholm the vast majority of miles on electricity.

– We never refuel in Stockholm and drive 90 percent of our trips in the city without emissions. I rarely drive more than four miles a day. A plug-in hybrid really suits our needs perfectly.

The Mazda CX-60 has a range of 63 kilometers according to WLTP*. The option is available to drive up to 140 km/h on electricity. Ulf Jonsson highlights another function he likes with the charging hybrid.

– A clever thing is that you can charge it by pressing a button when driving on petrol. When we go north, I usually use the function during the final part of the trip. It uses a little more fuel, but it’s hardly noticeable, he says.

– When we arrive, we have five miles of electricity for the car. The little I drive up here I therefore drive on electricity.

The electric motor is mounted between the fuel motor and the gearbox, allowing all four wheels to be driven electrically. Ulf Jonsson is happy to avoid having to cold start the petrol engine to drive two kilometers up north.

– It is absolutely superb. We avoid wear and tear on the engine and make an environmentally friendly choice at the same time.
