New York : Nikki Haley receives criticism for refusing to say that slavery was the primary cause of the American Civil War. Supporters of Republican primary opponent Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis are joining Democrats in attacking the former South Carolina governor.

At a town hall meeting in Berlin, New Hampshire, where the first Republican primary was being held, a voter asked Haley, who was also ambassador to the UN, what had caused the bloodiest war in American history. “I think the cause of the Civil War was basically how government should work,” Haley said. “Freedoms…and what people can and can’t do.

“I think the role of the government and the rights of the people are relevant here. I think the government has tried to ensure the rights of the people.”

In a lengthy reply, Haley went wild, even touching on capitalism and First Amendment rights.

But the questioner said that the answer was surprising without touching slavery. “What shall I say of slavery?” Haley asked back.

The caption under Haley’s video on President Biden’s X account read: “It was regarding slavery.”

Jayme Harrison, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, said blacks who lived in South Carolina while Haley was governor were not surprised by their response.

“Sorry Haley, the Civil War was definitely regarding slavery,” Rep. said Dean Phillips (Democrat-Minnesota).

Brian Griffiths, a spokesman for DeSantis, called it “chaos created by Haley.”
