Research, published in the journal Scientific Reports, found that skipping a night-time dental hygiene may raise your risk of cardiovascular disease.
The results of the study confirmed that while brushing teeth before breakfast is necessary, brushing them before bed is more important for preventing cardiovascular problems.
The research team looked at participants aged 20 or older who had been admitted to Osaka University Hospital in Japan between April 2013 and March 2016 for examination, surgery or treatment.
Furthermore, subjects who went to a hospital dental unit for perioperative dental and oral care and for screening for infection were also considered.
Including a total of 1,675 participants, the researchers put the subjects into four groups.
The MN group consisted of people who brushed their teeth twice a day, once following waking up and once at night.
The Night group reported brushing their teeth only once at night, while the M group only brushed following waking up.
Plus, the last group didn’t do this basic oral hygiene practice at all.
The researchers then assessed each participant’s age, gender, smoking history, and follow-up results. In addition, four independent investigators also looked at the dental and medical records of all study participants.
They focused on factors such as oral health, frequency of hospitalizations, time to brushing teeth, depth of periodontal pockets, range of motion and number of teeth.
When it came to markers of cardiovascular health, the researchers considered hospitalization for heart failure and arrhythmias, myocardial infarction, angina, and valvular and aortic disease requiring surgery.
The results indicated that non-smokers in both groups had a “significantly” worse prognosis when they were admitted to hospital for cardiovascular problems.
On the other hand, the MN and Night groups had higher survival rates, and while the team explained that the findings were limited to cardiovascular disease, they stressed the importance of nighttime brushing.
Therefore, brushing teeth at night is important to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.
