“We had brought furniture to Crete for a photo shoot, then we had to bring it back to Belgium,” Thieu told our colleagues from the Nieuwsblad. While the couple’s truck was to board a boat for Italy, no more places were available. The two Belgians therefore found a hotel near the port. After checking his truck that evening and the next morning, Thieu boarded safely. As he opened the tailgate, he found himself face to face with three Afghan men.
The authorities thus proceeded to their arrest… as well as that of the couple. Their phones were taken away from them and they were held in “inhumane” conditions. “There were no toilets, no toilet paper. Feces were hung on the wall, ”says Thieu to our colleagues. Although they were released following posting bail, they are still not free and must now provide a great deal of evidence regarding their status and activities. Their truck and its contents were also confiscated.
The FPS Foreign Affairs declares that it is doing what is necessary, but cannot really intervene, since the couple is not physically in need and benefits from legal protection.
