Because of a fire in a tunnel in Austria, a night train of the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) was evacuated on Wednesday evening.

151 people were rescued from the train, as announced by the state of Tyrol. 33 of them were slightly injured and taken to hospitals with suspected smoke inhalation.

The Nightjet was passing through the Terfen Tunnel near Fritzens when the fire broke out. The emergency services and authorities did not provide any information on the cause of the accident.

The ORF broadcaster and the APA news agency reported that, according to emergency services, damage to the overhead line had caused a fire on cars that were being transported on a car wagon on the train. An overhead line fell on cars. The cars then caught fire.

The Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) reported shortly before midnight on Twitter that all people from the NJ420 had been evacuated. The ÖBB thanked the emergency services on site.

All people who did not need medical care were taken to Innsbruck by bus, where sleeping facilities were also organized for all those affected.

According to the ÖBB spokesman, the night train left Vienna on Wednesday evening. The night train NJ420 runs from Innsbruck via Germany to Amsterdam.

The fire triggered a large-scale deployment of rescue workers, around 700 emergency services were deployed, according to the Tyrolean authorities. About 20 fire crews responded to extinguish the flames and rescue the passengers.
