Cancer symptoms aren’t always the easiest to spot, which means knowing what to look for is key, and one of the telltale signs of the deadly condition can appear during the night.
“Many cancer symptoms may seem worse at night,” said Dr. Deborah Lee, of Dr. Fox Online Pharmacy.
There is some evidence that cancer cells may grow more quickly overnight, although more research is needed.”
The doctor explained that the most common symptom that occurs during this time is excessive sweating during sleep.
Excessive sweating during sleep, or night sweats, is considered by doctors as a serious warning sign, according to the British Express newspaper.
She said: “This is a potentially serious symptom that might mean there is an important underlying disease, and often this sweating is so intense that it wets the bed linen, so the patient has to get up, shower and change the bedding.”
Dr. Lee explained, “You shouldn’t take night sweats lightly if:
Persistent (occurs most nights or more than once a night)
Waking up during sleep
So severe that you have to get out of bed to take a shower and change the bedding
If accompanied by a fever.
While cancers of the kidney, liver, and ovary can present with this sign, excessive sweating during sleep is a symptom of leukemia (cancer of the blood) and lymphoma (cancer of the lymph system).
“Other accompanying symptoms are fever, unexplained weight loss, itchy skin, and fatigue,” Dr. Lee said.
Although night sweats are considered a red flag for cancer, it may not always indicate a fatal condition.
“For example, there are many other causes of night sweats that are not due to cancer, the most common being menopausal hot flashes and night sweats,” the doctor said.
However, Dr. Lee stressed the importance of having any persistent and unusual symptoms checked out by a physician.
The good news is that there are plenty of measures to prevent night sweats from interfering with your sleep.
The doctor recommended the following steps to keep cool at night:
Sleep in a cool bedroom with a window or fan open if possible.
Wear cool cotton pajamas and avoid synthetic fabrics
Get plenty of cool showers or showers
Maintain moisture well throughout the night
Avoid eating spicy foods
Avoid alcohol and caffeine at least six hours before bedtime
Try sleeping on a cool gel pillow
Doing exercise during the day, but not in the hours before bedtime
Practice relaxation techniques to reduce your stress levels, during the day and before bed at night.
Some medications help reduce night sweats.
