This is what emerges from a survey carried out on Thursday by several sections of the socialist trade union ABVV, in collaboration with KU Leuven.

In addition, two-thirds of respondents said they slept poorly and three-quarters said their private life was unbalanced due to variable hours.

The Centrale générale and the metalworking union MWB describe the results as “significant”, with major implications “for the physical and mental health of workers, but also for their social and family life”. These include decreased productivity, increased irritability, and even relationship problems that can lead to divorce,” the report states.

As a result, one in four respondents said they wanted to leave the sector or switch to day work.

For the trade union federations, this is a “serious problem which unfortunately remains under-reported”. They therefore denounce the advantageous subsidies for shift and night work and point out that there are several ways (through the Committee for Prevention and Protection at Work or through collective bargaining) to improve working conditions.

The survey was conducted among 4,586 people and was released on the eve of World Day for Safety and Health at Work.
