To determine if night owls are more likely to die prematurely, researchers followed nearly 24,000 twins in Finland from 1981 to 2018. We explain their results to you.
Are you more of a night owl or an early night owl? When it comes to sleep, everyone has their little habits. If children are naturally morning people, teenagers tend to prefer staying up late and sleeping in. As for adults, it all depends. The National Institute of Sleep and Vigilance (INSV) specifies that the average duration of sleep for an adult is eight hours. Some are content with six hours of sleep, while others need nine to ten hours to feel rested. And according to a study published in the journal Chronobiology Internationalidentified by Version Femina, night owls are more likely to die at a younger age than those who prefer to go to bed early. If that didn’t no relation to sleep quality Night owls, there is still a fairly simple explanation.
Premature death: alcohol and tobacco responsible
To reach this conclusion, scientists followed 24,000 same-sex twins in Finland for thirty-seven years. This very long study thus began in 1981. The researchers had, at the time, asked the participants if they were more in the morning or in the evening. A third described themselves as more of an evening person, 10% “really evening”, and all the others were morning people, noted theHuffington Post.
A few years later, the results came in: the night owls tended to be younger, but also to drink and smoke more than the others. By 2018, more than 8,700 of the twins had died. The researchers then estimated that true “night owls” had a risk of death from all causes, 9% higher than others. A difference “mainly due to tobacco and alcohol” according to them: night owls who do not smoke and drink little did not show an increased risk of dying earlier than early risers.
It is thus the bad habits that accompany late bedtimes, such as smoking and alcohol, which are responsible for these premature deaths. The author of this study, Christer Hublin, advises people who are “really evening (of) reflect on their alcohol and tobacco useif they consume it”. He specifies, “regardless of other factors, the time at which individuals tend to go to bed has little or no effect on their mortality”. Night owls can therefore continue to do so, provided they follow a healthy lifestyle.
