Nigeria sent Venezuela home last weekend with a 4-0 win that also put them in the round of 16 of the U-20 Women’s World Cup, second behind Germany, the team leading Group D.

The affectionately called ‘Chamas’ finished in last place in the group, with one point out of a possible nine.

Venezuela’s coach, Italian Pamela Conti, put forward an attacking eleven with four forwards: Mariana Barreto, Francelis Graterol, Floriangel Apostol and Karelis Alvarado. But she paid dearly for her audacity because her players soon succumbed to the 35-degree heat of the city of Cali and the better physical adaptation of the Africans.

Moments

In the first minutes of the match, several missed shots by Philomina Yina and Chiamaka Okwuchukwu filled the Vinotinto area with fear until in the 16th minute Amina Bello scored the first for the Africans after a great assist from Okwuchukwu who in the 28th minute extended the lead for the Nigerians who at that moment looked ready for victory.

In the fifth minute of added time in the first half, Flourish Sabastine scored the third and practically anticipated the end of the match.

In the second half, which was more even, there were no major changes.

Venezuela made some changes to try to close the gap and tried with Génesis Hernández, but they were never able to create any danger against a Nigeria that sealed the show in the last moments of the match with a goal from Joy Igbokwe from mid-distance.
