Nigeria’s President-elect Bola Tinubu appealed for the country’s unity on Wednesday in the followingmath of the elections, media reported on Thursday.
In his speech, Bola Tinubu said that the divisions that characterized the weekend polls should not persist in the post-election period.
“There are divisions between us that should not exist.
Many people are confused, angry and hurt. I address each of you. May the best aspects of our humanity be brought to the fore at this crucial time. Let’s start dressing the
wounds and bring calm to our nation,” he insisted.
Tinubu added that this success would serve all people in the West African country and vowed to collaborate with opposition parties, some of which contested the election results.
A candidate for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) party, Tinubu garnered 8.7 million votes in the election which took place on February 25-26, according to Mahmood Yakubu, chairman of the country’s electoral commission. .
The candidate of the main opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, obtained 6.9 million votes, while the candidate of the Labor Party (LP), Peter Obi, obtained 6.1 million , according to the official results.
Eighteen candidates stood for the presidential election in this most populous country in Africa with approximately 206 million inhabitants.
President Tinubu will succeed incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari.
